Greenpeace Releases its 2nd Report on the Energy [R]evolution Scenario
By R. Brown, Web Exclusive Posted Nov. 03, 2008
Non-profit organization, Greenpeace (www.greenpeace.org) recently released its 2nd report on the Energy [R]evolution: A Sustainable Global Energy Outlook.

This report, according to Greenpeace, paints the only scenario on how to contemporaneously reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, eliminate nuclear power, save money, and aid global economic development.

The plan called for a peak of worldwide carbon emissions by 2015 and a 50% reduction by the year 2050. The proposal also details how $18 trillion can be saved through efficient energy practices and how a $360 trillion industry can be created by renewable energy technology. Greenpeace proposes a three step approach:

(1)     Electrical efficiency using our technological potential to produce efficient systems
(2)     Structural changes: which embraces the move from centralized to decentralized energy production and the exploitation of natural thermal resources currently wasted, and
(3)     Energy efficient transport: this calls for fuel efficient public transportation vehicles and fuel efficient cars and trucks.

In its news release, Greenpeace stated, “With today’s economic instability, investing in renewable energy technologies is a ‘win-win-win’ scenario: a win for energy security, a win for the economy, and a win for the climate. While ‘business as usual’ energy scenarios come at the cost of the climate and the economy, the Energy [R]evolution makes a clear case for ‘business as unusual’. The renewable industry is ready and able to deliver the needed capacity to make the energy revolution a reality. There is no technical impediment to doing this, just a political barrier to overcome as we rebuild the global energy sector.”
